European Union flags are seen outside the European Commission headquarters in BrusselsThe European Commission said on May 2 that it is taking back 123.3 million euros ($162.3 million) from Greece in agricultural subsidies because the government had failed to properly monitor the account.

In overall, EC is going to take back 230 million euros ($302.8 million)  from 14 member-states under the control of Common Agricultural Policy expenditures.

These sums will be returned to the EU budget due to non-compliance with the communitarian regulations or due to faulty control procedures of the agricultural expenses.

European Union countries are responsible for paying out and controlling the expenses in the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy, while EU oversees proper utilization of funds by the member states.

In particular, Greece will return 83.6 million euros ($110.10 million,)  due to unlawful reduction of the raisins yield, while 8.9 million euros ($11.72 million) will be returned from the agricultural animal sector because of delays in data updating and in spot controls.
