During an open debate in Vienna, Austria, Alexander Wrabetz, General Manager of the Austrian public service broadcaster Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) said that the European Union is also responsible for the closure of the Greek national broadcaster ERT.
Wrabetz said: “Of course the EU is responsible for the closure of ERT, even if the Troika had not asked for this specific measure,” referring to the international lenders demanding a downsizing of Greece’s public sector.
On his part, the director at European Commission office in Austria, Mark Fendrich, argued in favor of EU on the same topic, stating that this is an interior case of Greece and EU had no authority to intervene.
According to Fendrich, it was better that the Supreme Court decided on ERT’s case, as Greece “is not an occupied country.” The EU has only suggested general recommendations concerning the cuts in the public sector, he added.
